Orchesis Performance Reflection
Please take a moment to respond to the orchesis concert this past weekend, either as an audience member, choreographer or performer. This is not a review, only performance reflection.

I definitely enjoyed this year’s spring orchasis concert. Every dance was fun and easy to watch, and I thought it was very interesting to know that people in my grade were the choreographers of these dances. It was also interesting to see the many different styles of dances. The vast difference between dances like “Nachle” and “Back to school” made the whole show even more worth-while to watch because of the different cultures that were being displayed in the performances.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:59 pmI LOVED LOVED LOVED Sonali’s piece. It combined ancient Indian culture and modern dance moves into a spicy and satisfying curry of a dance. I love Indian culture so it was great to see it on stage. I could tell everyone was having a lot of fun because so many people were lip synching the words as they danced (how they did that i don’t know; those words sounded hard to pronounce!) and smiling. The costumes were sooo cool too. overall that was the highlight of the concert.
May 1st, 2008 at 9:53 ami was not able to go to the show but i was able to see sonali’s peice on a thursday during dance class. i loved her piece it was very interesting and unique, that style of dance is just amazing, if i had to pick a dance to learn i would deffinitally want to learn sonali’s.
May 1st, 2008 at 10:41 amThis Orchesis show for me was one of the best and most fun to be in. I did all different types of dances. It would have been fun though to be in Sonali’s Indian piece. I have never danced in a a diffent style before other than the ones we are used to. Since I will be on Orchesis is college they perhaps may have a cultural piece. If they do I will make sure to take part in it. But the Orchesis show had a vast array of dances. I believe it was the most diverse yet. I had many friends and family comes and they all enjoyed it and they too said it was the best Orchesis show they had seen.
May 1st, 2008 at 10:47 amI thought that this past orchesis show was one of the strongest shows we’ve ever had. All the choreographers put a lot of thought and hard work into their pieces and we had a wide variety of dances which kept the audience, and dancers, interested. The pieces ranged from Sonali’s Indian dance, to Lindsay’s tap dance, to Katrina’s lyrical dance, all well put together pieces. As a dancer I loved being able to dance a variety of styles in the show, being able to be a different person in each piece. I tried to get in touch with the indian style of Sonali’s piece, was more serious in Nikki’s modern piece, was more upbeat in my jazz piece, and then enjoyed working with partners in the disco partner dance. I thought it was a great way to end my orchesis career!
May 1st, 2008 at 10:50 amI think being in the orchesis company gives me a more interesting perspective into how the pieces grow from the first rehearsal to the final production. I can really appreciate the effort put into the pieces as some may be more difficult to put on stage than others. I was a dancer in Sonali’s piece and I can remember our first rehearsal time slot all of us being so lost and confused with this new type of movement that was so foreign to our bodies. It was really difficult for us to learn the specifics of all the movement and how to execute it correctly. After a couple weeks of rehearsal we began to understand the way our bodies were supposed to work with the movement and our improvement was noticable. Then, what is interesting to me is to reflect more on our first rehearsal and the finished product. It gives me more of an appreciation for how hard other art forms have to work and also other dancers.
May 1st, 2008 at 10:50 amMy favorite piece of the orchesis spring show was “Something to Say.” This piece was choreographed by Constance. I was lucky enough to be a part of this piece. This dance really expressed emotion using the lyrics. All the movement was developed very nicely and really reached through every part of the body. I liked the different groupings and formations that singled out the solo dancer. The most effective part of the whole dance was definitely the ending. The way the dancers came back together in the same beginning formation really made the piece a whole. This was a great opening piece for the show.
May 2nd, 2008 at 8:29 amThis show was one of my favorites so far! I loved all of my dances! Ashley’s “Searching For a Hero” dance was great. Her dance was really fun to be in character with as a superhero. I loved wearing the blue gloves. They definitely made the costume. I thought that this show had a lot of variety, but we were missing the usual hip hop dance! I really liked the order of the show because I thought it mixed very well. Having Ashley and Rachel’s “American Woman” as the last dance was a great choice because it was a very powerful piece. I really enjoyed watching all the different levels and groups that those girls put together with so many girls. I can’t wait for the next show in the fall! We need to start thinking of ideas for a theme!
May 2nd, 2008 at 6:41 pmI had gone to the spring Orchesis show last year, so I was excited to see the show this year, too. Probably my favorite piece was the disco one where the girls danced with the guys, and the guys had their solo part. I thought it was a really fun piece. Another piece I really liked was “Wind.” I actually wrote my dance review on this one. My favorite part about this piece other than the music was the costumes. They really fit with the wind motif and emphasized the movements of the dancers. I also liked how this piece used a lot of different groupings of the dancers. You’d have one group coming toward you, across the stage, then they’d go back and another group would come out toward another angle. I think the coreographer did a good job using the nuances of the music to create the piece.
May 3rd, 2008 at 1:39 pmUnfortunately, I was only able to see the first half of the show. I wish I could have stayed for the whole thing because it really was spectacular. The peices were, for the most part; light, impowering, and fun. I really liked the Indian piece and the last piece before intermission when all the guys came out on stage. It looked like so much fun. I also really like how so many members are in our grade and as we watch we see so many of our classmates up on the stage. It truly was an amazing show.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:30 pmI really enjoyed this past Orchesis show. I love seeing the senior pieces, and it’s expecially exciting now that I know the seniors. I really like the solo pieces, like Ashley Burns’s, Courtney Cox’s and Allison Lyon’s. They really give the audience a chance to see what the individual girls can do. Ashley was really creative with her choreography, and I like how Allison incorperated the stairs into her dance. Courtney’s costuming was really clever, because it went with the song. I also like knowing the choreographers, like Ashley Pietrzak’s “I Need a Hero” dance. I know she is really talented when it comes to leg extensions and I saw a lot of that in the dance, and so that was an interesting connection I could make because I know her, and have seen her dance for four years. I am definatly going to miss seeing the Orchesis shows next year, and I’ll probably have to come back for at least one.
May 12th, 2008 at 6:32 pmI thought some of the senior pieces were especially creative, for instance Allison Lyons’ piece to John Mayer’s gravity encorporating the stairs was really powerful. We had an emotional connection to her struggle and we felt the release and accomplishment when she finally achieved her goal. It really left me with a positive feeling about the lessons that high school has taught me and my ability to face challanges in the future. I also liked the piece that combined tumbling with dance because I feel if there’s any time to really show off and pull out all those tricks, it’s for your senior solo.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:31 amThis past orcesis show was definitely one of my favorites. There was a wide variety of dances and themes throughout the show. This show had a lot of modern pieces in it and i think that was different for us. I could also connect with alot of the the pieces, i think that the choreographers all worked very hard. Another reason why this show was my favorite is because i had choreographed a piece along with Madeleine and Caroline. It was a great experience to actually be in a authoritative posistion rather than be in the dancers role. It was fun being able to put a piece together just by trying different ideas and different movement patterns. I really enjoyed watching Sonali’s piece as well as Constance’s piece, those two were definitely two of my favorites. Overall i think this was a very strong show for orchesis as a company, and i think if we keep heading in this direction, there will be tons more shows to come.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:51 amI believe that this year’s Spring Orchesis Show was one of the best shows we have produced. I really felt that all the choreographers who set a piece on stage really took their talents to produce a piece that reflected their own personal theme with good technique involved. I remember picking the dances we were going to do and having such a hard time choosing because there were so many good ideas. I really liked the versatility of this year’s concert. I think my favorite dance was Sonali’s indian dance. it was so different and such a good expirience for me. I never had done anything like that and it was a real challenge for me. Overall the show went great. The dancers all did a very good job conveying the mood of the pieces. The order of the show was pretty good, but I think that we could have started with a better beginning. I think that we should have started out with a jazz piece that would excite the audience. However, our concert built as it went on which was good to see. All the duets and solos were so great and meshed well with the concert. This concert was very good dancing it and watching it later on the DVD!
May 19th, 2008 at 10:51 amThinking back to the orchesis show, i was really impressed with all of the pieces of choreography that our members created. We have such a great group of dancers and i loved to work with everyone! Tech week is such a fun experience and i really enjoyed to watch all the dances and even get to learn a few of them just by seeing them! I thought the show was very successful and I think that the show came together quite nicely. I also liked how in dance class we started learning a few pieces from the spring show. Even though i was in Nikkis, and she taught it in class it was nice to go back and review some of the movement. It also gave me the opportunity to learn the actual choreography of the pieces that i was not able to participate in such as Constances.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:57 amThis past orchesis show was very well done. I enjoyed watching all of the dances that I was in and my friends were in. I feel like the choreographers this time really thought out the choreography and made it so the students would look good in. I enjoyed being in the show this semester and I feel like i learned a lot of new things from my dances. I felt like the costuming and lighting made all of the pieces look amazing. My favorite piece of this semester was Nikki’s. I am so happy we got to learn it in dance class and I hope I can remember it for a long time.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:58 amThe Orchesis performance this past spring was really fun. The show seemed to have a variety of style with the dances which made the performance all the better. I felt so energetic the whole weekend and excited to do our last performance of the year. Although it was sad at some points the end result was totally worth it. I really enjoyed watching the solos. It was sad that some of the girls were crying but they did such a good job. During the performance I kept thinking, that will be me in two years. How sad!
May 19th, 2008 at 10:58 amOne of my mom’s friends that came to the concert said a really kind thing that i thought i should share. She said that the performance was amazing first of all. But she was telling my mom that she felt that she could relate to the way that the dancers acted on the stage. If they were smiling that made her smile and if they were sad then she would feel sad. She said she absolutely loved the music. I’m actually making her a mix C.D. of all of the songs from the performance. She can’t wait to see next years performance. I hope that next year will just as or even better than this year.
I really enjoyed performing in this past spring show. Because it was my last dance show of high school it meant a lot to me emotionally and i was very happy to have a great last show of my high school career. I felt that all the hardwork that each dancer in the company put into this show really paid of and was reflected in all performances.
I really enjoyed having the opportunity to learn some of these past dances i was not able to be in for the show in dance class this past week. I felt that all the choreography this semester was very well done.
I recieved lots of positive feed back from this past show and was very proud to have the opportunity to be a part of it. I will miss orchesis very much but i am so happy that i have had an opportunity to be a part of it these past two years.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:43 pmI feel that this performance reflected a lot of growth within the choreographers creativity level. This year, we used platforms, stairs, and many other elements to enhance each piece. All the choreographers really stepped outside the box to create intricate and unique pieces. I’m really happy that I get to leave Orchesis on such a good note.
May 20th, 2008 at 8:02 amI was really sad to perform for the last time on the BHS stage, but I think this years Orchesis show helped the seniors go out with a bang. The show really came together well and it had a unique blend of modern, jazz, and other styles of dance. The styles of music also varied greatly, from Indian music in Sonali’s piece to silence and then acapella music in Ellen’s piece. The senior solos, duets, and trios added another unique element to the show; the pieces really showed each dancer’s personal talent and committment to dance. I loved lots of the large group pieces too, especially “American Woman” by Ashley and Rachel. The dancers really connected on stage and shared in their emotions; the audience picked up on this, and I recieved lots of positive feedback from family and friends. I’ll be sad to leave Orchesis, but I think us seniors have had great experiences with our performances these last four years!
May 20th, 2008 at 6:32 pmMy favorite dance that was performed at the Orchesis show was Sonali’s piece. I thought this piece was the most interesting to see on stage and the best performed. If I could pick a dance to learn out of all the pieces i would definitely choose this piece. I also liked Nikki’s piece also, this piece was also just as unique and well performed. I enjoyed the experience of watching both pieces. It was a great show.
May 21st, 2008 at 9:46 pmThis past orchesis show was one of my favorites. It really meant alot to me because it was my last one and i felt like the seniors got so close. One of my favorite dances was katrinas because i felt like the choregraphy was beautiful and amazing. She also had a great motif and climax to her piece. I also thought that there where a lot of lyrical pieces in the show but it didnt get boring because each one was very different and unique.
May 29th, 2008 at 9:29 pmI really enjoyed this Orchesis show, as usual. But i especially liked that i knew alot of the girls this year and having nearly all of the compositions be by senior girls. It was really neat to see what girls my age could create and put togather in this show. I also really enjoyed the music selection for this show, i thought that the dances were all very good as well as being very unique and interesting. There was really a wide variety of types of dances, costume, rhythm and sound within them as well as within the show. I enjoyed it very much it was another well done show.
