In order to be a student discipline and respect is crucial. As a student key abilities would be to be able to work with others which means you need to have a certain respect for others as well as your teachers. You need to have listening skills to listen and follow directions given by your teachers. Dancers, more importantly, need to respect one another considering when you respect one another it creates more unity on stage when performing. If you did not respect each other and it caused conflicts, the dances would not flow smoothly. It especially applies to partner work since you have to work together and your safety is on the line. Dancers need discipline as well because without hard work and perserverance you would never be able to perfect a piece. It requires patience to learn and clean the dance pieces. If you didn’t have the discipline it required to make a piece performance worthy then the piece will never become what it could be. When you work hard and respect classmates and teachers things in the studio and on the stage will go much more smoothly.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:05 amAs a student it is important to show your respect for you teacher and your peers. This can include anything from just paying attention while someone else is talking and not talking with friends, or getting involved with the class work. As a dancer, the same rules should apply, but to a different level. As a dancer, the level of respect must be a little more personal because of the environment that the dancers are in. We are working with full range of motion and we must respect each person’s personal space while, at the same time, making our movement artistic and beautiful.
March 19th, 2008 at 4:04 pmDiscipline and respect are both very important in our everyday lives. We experience new challenges all the time and have to face them with an open mind. At school we have to listen and participate in class and we must respect our teachers as well as our peers. Our teachers use discipline to keep classes controlled but hopefully the students can be respectful enough so that too much disciplinary action is not necessary. As dancers, it requires a lot of personal discipline to achieve your goals. Since we dance as a group, it requires respect to the coreographer so that we can put together a cohesive piece. Dance is a discipline oriented sport because it takes a lot of time and focus to learn new skills and movement that all eventually come together to create a beautiful group piece.
March 30th, 2008 at 3:45 pmIn today’s society I tend to see less respect and disipline. But in the dance world there is and always will be this level of respect. As a dancer we work with countless others sometimes sharing ideas or sometimes just taking directions.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:11 pmAs a student there is the respect for the teachers and hopefully for all our peers. As a dancer we not only have to be respectful of our voices but also of our movement and personal space. To be a dancer is to know who you are but at the same time knowing when to adhere to other choreographers ideas. There are so many different types of dance and they all must utilize the same principals of respect and disicpline.
With me i play the violin so i have learned that disipline and respect are essential things that everyone needs to have. I think that with dance the disipline that comes is not quiting. By always making sure you are doing what is best for you and you are just not cutting yourself short because you want to be lazy.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pmI think that respect can be taken in many different ways. By just respecting others opinions and suggestions. I also think that dancing you also have to respect your body and who you are personally. With one of my sisters doing dance for a period of her life. She not respect her body in the ways of eating healthy and she always put herself down for for not getting things right and the fact that others were much better than her. Over the years it has taken its toll.
So i think that you need to respect yourself inorder to really enjoy the joys of dance.
Respect and discipline are essential not only in dance class, but other classes as well as life as a whole. You must respect your teacher as well as your classmates in order to achieve and accomplish tasks. Also you must respect not only the people around you but the space and the ideas that you are taught. Discipline is also important in order to reach goals and stay focused. We must be able to work by ourselves as well as with others and accomplish what is needed. Also specifically in dance it takes discipline and practice in order to learn or put togather a piece, perhaps more than we are used to in other classes.
April 1st, 2008 at 7:14 amI think that respect and discipline are both very important aspects of dance. In order to be a successful dancer you have to be able to discipline yourself to listen to the teacher and learn each and every step that you are given so you can be a team player in the studio. You also have to be able to respect yourself as a dancer in order to make progress in the classroom as a dancer.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:00 amDiscipline and respect are crucial to dancing because if you don’t have discipline or respect it’s pretty difficult to learn and progress in any way.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:54 pmIn order to learn dance, a dances must be respectful. In Indian lore there is a saying that to receive water from a pitcher one must tip their cup. In dance that same sort of humility is needed to learn anything for there is constant criticism involved in teaching dance. An egotistical dancer can get so far.
Dance is difficult; it is painful, time consuming, and tiring. However, the benefits of expressing oneself through movement far outweigh any of these stresses. To feel the joy of dance one has to give up a lot; it can become difficult to keep on the oath. A dancer must be disciplined enough to over come these difficulties.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:23 pmBeing students for 13 years, we have been trained to discipline ourselves and be respectful to our teachers and peers. without discpline and respect, our classrooms and learning experiences would fall apart, along with our character. If one wants to be respected, they must show respect first. If you want to get good grades, go to a good college, and get a good job, you must discipline yourself, sometimes choosing studying over more fun things. these same principles largely apply to dance. As dancers I feel that sometimes we don’t get enough respect from society as we deserve; dancers are some of the most athletic people out there. thus, it is important for us as dancers to be open to new styles of dance, and respect other dancers and choreographers for their artform. As we have seen through various guest artists and performances, there are many different styles of dance and none are better than the other. Discipline is also important for a dancer. In order to push yourself and become a better dancer sometimes you have to go to class on a friday night when your friends are at the movies, and sometimes you have to move away from your talkative friend to focus on the combination you are learning. A little discipline can lead to great improvements, but it can not always come from a teacher, it has to come from within.

I believe that respect and discipline are key to suceeding as a dancer. Having the mind set of accomplishment for yourself as well as fellow classmates is important. Having discipline that suits yourself is important in that it allows you to push yourself. Being respectful to your dance teacher shows the kind of person you are. If you are late to class, or are not participating it is clear to the teacher that you do not wish to learn. If you are respectful to your dance instrusctor they too will respect you.
April 15th, 2008 at 1:29 pmIn order to participate in a class as a student respect is necessary in order to obtain discipline. Being a teacher myself, I find that many studetns struggle with cricitism. I think in order for a student to better themselves they need to accept criticism. There is a fine line between being a teacher and a peer and being a dancer it is vital to be respectful of your teacher and of your classmates. Part of discipline is drive. Many students who are advanced at their level drive themselves to be better by taking in the cricism and bettering themsleves.
May 1st, 2008 at 10:40 amDiscipline and respect are truely the main factors that will define a dancer. When I think about it, I always come back to the idea that what you put into something is what you will get out of it. If you are willing to work hard and respect the art, your choreographers, and your fellow dancers then you will be gaining so much more from the experiance then if you sit around and goof off with your friends throughout the entire class. I know from personal experiance that the best classes are the ones where you are most focused. Pushing yourself and respecting dance will truely get you where you want to be with enough hard work–but, that’s only possible with a strong foundation.
May 1st, 2008 at 10:58 amDiscipline and Respect are very important aspects in life. Discipline is key if you want to achieve your goals and it is very important to strive and push your limits as a dancer. In a class room, respect should be the number one thing. Students need to respect eachothers space, effort, and dedication while dancing. Giving your teacher respect, listeing, and all of your attention is important because he/she is the one who is taking the time to teach the students! Overll, respect and discipline will come with improvments and make you a better person.

May 16th, 2008 at 8:53 amAny thing takes discipline to do well. My violin teacher likes to quote Mr. Miagi from the karate kid, saying, “If you walk on the left side of the road, okay, if you walk on the right side of the road, okay, if you walk down the middle, squish like grape. It’s the same with violin. If you’re commited and practice all the time, okay, if you don’t play an instrument that’s okay too, but if you only partially commit you’re just wasting your time.” And I think this applies to any sport/club/art. If you want to be a dance student, it takes the dedication to show up every day even when you’re not feeling well or you want to go hang out with your friends. Also, it’s not just enough to show up if you don’t give 100% while you’re there.
May 19th, 2008 at 9:45 amAs a student in a large school it is very important to discipline yourself because in high school you have to respect everyone and give everyone a chance. Once you reach high school there is not anyone pushing you to try your hardest anymore it is really how far you are willing to go yourself. Especially in dance class with a lot of girls it is hard becuase there is sucha large group and everyone is doing different things, but you know your limits and you know how hard you yourself is willing to try so you have to discipline yourself whether it is setting goals for yourself or encouraging yourself to get the step that you have been practicing. You do not always get correctd individually so you need to listen to the help that you get from your peers or your peers get and apply them to yourself as well and respect those who help you because they are trying to make you better because they know you can accomplish it.
