Dare to Dance film
How is the life these young dancers experience different from yours?
Do you have a passion? what is it? How do you “live” or experience your passion?
Can you relate to these girls and their passion? If so, how are you similar or how do you “fuel” your passion daily or on a regular basis?
Any other thoughts?

The dancers in the movie we watched today were extremely motivated. I think it would be difficult for me to put so much time and effort into one thing. I would find it hard not to have as much time as I do now for friends, family, and just other activities in general.
It’s good that they have found their passion though. I never really took any special classes as a child. I don’t know if I have any passions yet- I guess I do, but they’re not really that strong yet. I really enjoy being creative: my creativity is something I take pride in and other people recognize as one of my strengths, but that is kind of a vague passion, I suppose. I don’t really have one as definite as for example, dancing.
My passion to be creative is something that is incorporated into my life everyday, much like these girls focused on dancing quite a bit during their day. I use my ‘passion’ during school, trying to think outside the box, at my job, and at home where I have time to relax. One specific way I enjoy being creative is through artwork.
January 24th, 2008 at 8:58 pmIt was interesting to watch this video. When I go to professional dance performance, I always think about what it took to get to where the dancers are. They put their entire lives into dance. Some of the girls in this video will become professionals one day and they deserve it because they have put everything into the pursuit of their dream. I personally love dancing but my passion for it is not quite as strong as these girls’. Their lives are so different from mine because this one aspect of their lives consumes them almost completely. They said they barely have a social life and that most of their friends are the people they dance with. I love my social life and don’t think I could sacrifice so much for dance. It’s a competitive field and it’s crazy to think some young dancers will put so much into dance training but never fulfill their professional goals.
January 29th, 2008 at 12:38 pmThe video we watched in class was interesting…..I liked it. The life of the young dancers is different from mine because I am just someone who loves dancing for the fun of it……these girls looked like they were really into it…..they love it. For the girls in the video it is their passion. For me, I love dancing spanish types of music like cumbia, salsa, merengue, bachata and other types. I enjoy learning different types of dances but these are my favorite for having fun. At parties, music is the way that I “fuel” my passion for latin music……at home I like to try out new moves with my sister. The video was nice to see because we got to see from a different perspective whether it be similar or very different from our perspective.

I enjoyed this film. But after seeing what they do six days a week is a lot. I don’t know if I could handle that. Going right from school to dance and staying there for many hours each night and on weekends seems exhausting. But I praise them for what they do. Dance is my passion just like theirs, but I don’t dance as often as they do. Their’s is also different because their main focus is on ballet. Ballet is not one of my favorites so therefore I don’t think I would fit well into their lifestyle. If there was a combination of ballet, jazz, tap, and lyrical it would probably be easier for me to fit into. These girls are very committed to what they do. They rarely have anytime to do anything outside of dance. If I had no time to hang out with friends or just be on my own and do other things, that would be very difficult. In the future I hope to be dancing more that what I am now. In college I plan on minor in dancing or if I make the dance team I will do that.
March 2nd, 2008 at 8:47 pmI started dancing when I was three years old. I loved to dance but didn’t possess the dedication that the young dancers in the video have.
Being involved in the preschool program here at BHS has helped me discover my passion of helping and teaching children. I also love to volunteer and help those who are less fortunate. I live out my passions by volunteering my time and working at an after school program.
Seeing these girls dedication to dance amazes me. I know that I want to become a social worker and help troubled teens but my dedication isn’t quite there yet. But I will dedicate my time in college to pursue my career and develop skills that are needed. Just like the girls and their dance classes.
March 20th, 2008 at 12:03 amI can definitely relate to those girls, although my passion isn’t necessarily dance, the idea behind it is the same. For me, it’s singing. there was a quote once from a movie, Sister’s Act 2 that Whoopie Goldberg makes in reference to singing “If when you wake up in the morning and the first thing you think about is singing, then thats what you’re born to do.” I believe this to be completely and utterly true. If you want it so bad that every part of your being is craving it, you need to go for it. Who cares about what other people may tell you, it’s only what you believe and want to happen. It’s your choice. You’ll always have to sacrifice something but if it’s what you truly want than thats all that matters.
These girls lived there lives apart from everyone else, except those of their fellow dancers. Despite people telling them they may not make it they still danced. Which I think is what every one should focus on. It’s not what they think it’s what YOU think that matters.
March 31st, 2008 at 7:29 pmI wholeheartedly admire the dedication and determination that the students had in the video. They are completely entrenched in their art form almost every day of their lives. Most of us, like me, have an after-school activity from 3 till 6, but then have the weekends to work or relax. I understand their passion for it, but I also think it’s important to have a balanced life. I have many passions in life…and although it’s difficult to specify just one, I do have to say I am drawn to Theatre and Film. For the past four years I’ve been in Theatre class, Drama Club, the plays and musicals, etc. I live it by doing it. My high school career would have been miserably depressing and “normal” *shudder* if I had not signed up for that class freshman year. So following along with the concept of “living by doing”, I chose to double major in business and cinema studies to be a producer. Therefore, the fun will never end :).
Oh I certainly identify with these girls and their love of dance. I rehearse and prepare for the real rehearsal time/performances all the time, inside and out of school. I carry scripts with me everywhere. And, I love watching movies, especially indie films, to learn about the myriad of talents and effort that went into making it. All in all, I thought the movie was quite interesting, as it showed us an in depth look of their lives and also made us think about how we live ours.
